The National Library of Public Information has 5 floors above ground, and 2 floors below, occupying an area of 12,000 ping. The interior adopts a design concept of "out-side-in", introducing city frames of different heights into the interiors, and transforming them into the design themes and colors for every floor.

The National Library of Public Information is the first national digital library in Taiwan. We provide various digital facilities. There are different kiosks on the left side of the entrance to provide searches, tours, and reservation services. Inside, the Interactive Information Wall on the left displays our events. New Arrivals are displayed on the opposite side of the Digital Signage, showing new books and popular books. Are you ready? To enjoy the complete services of the library, do not forget to take your national ID card to the Circulation Service Counter to apply for a free library card. You can use this card to lend and return books from and to any library part of the Public Library Alliance.

All our rental collections come equipped with chip management to enable self-serviced checkout, return, the collect reserved books. You can use our FastBook to check out books, and use the sterilization box on the side for sterilization.

When you receive an email or SMS notification from the library, you can come and pick up your reserved books from the Books on Hold Pick-up area, as well as checking out the popular reserved books!

The Interactive Information Wall offers poster displays and interactive experiences, including a real-time information wall, themed book exhibitions, a pandemic prevention game, space navigation, Southeast Asia-themed games, and a Taichung historical map tour. Readers can switch between applications to explore library information and learn about pandemic prevention and new immigrant cultures through games.

The library offers a variety of Information Convenience Station (Kiosk) services, including event information inquiries, intelligent voice services, and the iLib Guider APP experience, making it convenient for readers to access the information they need nearby.

XR Story House

The 'XR Story House' features immersive interactive projection combined with motion-sensing interaction. During the story, there are interactive parts where children are prompted to perform specific actions to complete tasks and continue watching the story.

“The Children's Library” is themed around the knowledge forest, ideal for children age 12 or below. The center has a Children's Area, Story House, Computer Search Area, Tree House Reading Area, and an AR Reading Experience Area that brings 2D books to 3D, bringing a diverse reading experience to the kids.

Our automated Book Drop area has the largest book sorting system among all public libraries. Drop the books through the window, and they will be automatically sorted. You will also have a chance to meet the most popular librarian in Taiwan here: Bopi! Bopi will occasionally appear here to assist in transporting children's books! Also, you may also utilize the 24HR book drop by the side doors to return books.

The "Digital Leisure Center" integrates digital technology education, recreational entertainment, and information services. Its featured themes include the "Dream-Pursuing Picture Book Database," the "Designer’s Hand Exhibition Platform," "Digital Leisure Audio-Visual Services," "Taiwan Original Animation Showcase," and "Unveiling the DNA of Books." The center offers digital hardware and software to provide the public with an innovative audio-visual reading experience.

The "Digital Art Center" is a multimedia exhibition space that collaborates with various organizations across industries to present a wide range of themes. These include showcasing outstanding student design works in partnership with design schools, and highlighting the theme "The Spirit of Originality – Fulfilling the Dream of Creating a Picture Book." The center features student creations, works reflecting local culture, and award-winning picture books, offering readers a rich and diverse reading experience.

The library offers a digital recording studio available for paid use. Those interested in digital art or audio-visual production activities may apply for reservation through the library's venue booking system.

The electronic databases offer access to over a hundred themed resources, including magazines, newspapers, children's picture books, language learning and testing materials, as well as music. Readers from our library and the Taichung Public Library can log in to the "Digital Resource Portal" (ers.nlpi.edu.tw) to use these services for free.

The eBook Service Platform (ebook.nlpi.edu.tw) currently provides access to over 50,000 eBooks. Readers from our library and the Taichung Public Library can log in directly to borrow eBooks. Additionally, patrons from any public library in other cities or counties may register for free with a valid library card to access and borrow eBooks as well.

The Information Retrieval Area provides computers for internet access and information searching. It includes a walk-in internet access zone and a Digital Resource Experience Area, both available without prior application. For extended use, patrons may reserve a computer for up to two hours with a valid library card.

We offer borrowing and return services for audiovisual materials, as well as the lending of information devices—such as laptops, tablets, and e-readers—for readers aged 12 and above. In addition, digital resource consultation services are available to assist with the use of the library’s digital offerings.

Audiovisual materials are available for borrowing, including DVDs, VCDs, BDs, UHD BDs, CDs, CD-Rs, videotapes, and audiotapes.

The Mini Exhibition Area showcases a wide range of digital reading resources, highlighting research achievements from six major research centers under the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs), covering Earth and environmental sciences, information and communication technology, and biomedical research. Presented under the theme “Scientists’ Secret Base @ Taichung”, the exhibit aims to promote the accessibility and popularization of scientific achievements, allowing visitors to experience the wonder of science and technology.

We provide a dual-screen multitasking learning environment for accessing the library’s language learning electronic databases. This setup allows users to take notes and look up vocabulary while studying, enhancing the overall learning experience. Reservations can be made with a valid library card.

The library offers various seating options, including individual, two-person, group viewing, and public broadcast audio-visual channels. It also provides spaces for photography and speaking practice. These services allow readers to enjoy the library’s cloud-based audio-visual content as well as the public broadcast audio-visual collections.

‘The Information Center for the Hearing/Visually Impaired” offers dual books, audio books, braille books, computers for the blind, and toy blocks. Additionally, there are multi-functional workshops, and audio-book recording studios to provide the hearing and visually impaired with an exclusive accessible environment.

The Senior Learning Area is set up to meet the reading needs of the senior group age 55 or above. It has a thematic autonomous learning section, and big-print books, and digital newspaper machines and magnifiers that can zoom in on the texts. There are also digital leisure platforms that are equipped with Chinese and other electronic competitive games.

Diversified exhibition area conducts occasional thematic expos. In the past, we have worked with Academia Sinica and the National Science and Technology Museum in various thematic exhibitions. We are currently collaborating with technical colleges and universities in central Taiwan to become a platform for students to explore and discover, establishing the educational importance of the library to serve as a museum.

The Periodicals and Newspapers section is one of the popular sections of the library. The periodicals section displays approximately 300 types of periodicals on a artistically designed beehive-shaped bookshelf. The newspapers section is located near the periodicals section, providing over 30 types of newspapers in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Southeast Asian languages. It is the public library with the most comprehensive newspaper subscriptions.

Global Picture Book Center focuses on the promotion of all-age reading, and collects and displays picture books from more than 30 countries around the world, presenting the diversity and richness of picture book styles.

Taiwan's first American Corner will definitely satisfy your needs for information and cultures from all the states. The spatial design is themed around the Grand Canyon, ingeniously merging the shelves with the reading area. It provides over 4000 books for borrowing.

To promote multicultural services, the National Library of Public Information has partnered with Wallonia-Brussels International (WBI) to establish the "Belgian Corner," which officially opened on January 19, 2022. This collaboration aims to foster cultural and educational exchanges between Taiwan and Belgium, marking the first cooperative initiative between the Belgian Office in Taipei and Taiwan’s public library sector

The National Library of Public Information is a library specifically tasked by the Ministry of Education with counseling studying-abroad services in central Taiwan. The “Study Information Center” provides various information and consultation services on studying abroad, as well as conducting studying-abroad orientations, returned student seminars, and other events.

The Map Area provides printed maps, regional topography of Taiwan, and basemap photos.。

We store books and materials that have circulation records within the last 5 years. 4F stores books in the categories of natural sciences, social sciences, applied sciences, and languages; and 5F provides books in the categories of arts and humanities, English, Japanese, Southeast Asian, and other foreign languages.

In 2023, thanks to a generous donation from SHAN BEEN JEOU INDUSTRIAL CO., LTD., the National Library of Public Information acquired 3,287 new books and established the "Skyward Reading Nook" to house this special collection. This donation enriches our resources and offers readers a new space for inspiration, discovery, and the joy of reading.

The 5F Information Desk provides reference and inquiry services, interlibrary loan, and board game lending.

The Youth Section gathers young adult literature such as comics, magazines, and novels, and features the multi-functional smart space, "So Young Hall,". We providing board games, art supplies for borrowing(for using within the library only), and programming logic robots experiences. In addition, we also providing services such as puzzles, MAKER teaching aids(STEAM), and student dance practice space for using. We offer diverse reading promotion activities and themed exhibitions to meet the needs of young adults to express creativity and engage in hands-on experiences.

The “Study Room” can accommodate up to 316 people. It adopts an automated system management. Reservations can be made via the red seats in the KIOSK, as well as online through our website.

This area keeps approximately 23,000 data from the Japanese occupation period, and 15,000 bounded books from the early years of the Republic of China in constant temperature and humidity environment. These are documents of immense research values to understand the state of politics, economy, and society of the era.

In order to provide readers with a more spacious and comfortable reading environment, some of the less frequently borrowed books are stored here for borrowing. You can use the library catalogue system to apply for retrieval and borrowing.

This area keeps bound volumes of most newspapers after 1981, preserving past news and events in their entirety. Please apply for a retrieval service on 3F if you wish to read them or require photocopies.

Architectural Characteristics

Architectural Characteristics

 

The National Library of Public Information is the first library in Taiwan with a streamlined exterior design. The main building is oriented to the directions of the surrounding roads, and echoes with Taiwan's hydrological landscape in appearance. The curved and flowing walls are made of 8 kinds of stones in a mosaic pattern. Combined with the continuous horizontal window that resembles a corridor through space and time, as if the river of knowledge flows and converges here, emanating radiant rays of light under the sun.

Public art that incorporates architectural design principles, digital services, natural, and cultural images are set up inside and out of the library. In the plaza, "Read Happily - Unlimited - Big Future" by Mr. Zunzhi Yang demonstrates a futuristic handwriting, inviting the readers to bloom with knowledge. "Book of Brilliance" by Mr. Jiaqi's Lin has given chairs the appearance of books, integrating reading into the life of the general public. The piece "Contact", by Zongjie Li, that hangs in the 1F main hall are fingertips passing the light of knowledge. The piece is comprised of the numbers 0 and 1 as well as text symbols, symbolizing the transformation of the libraries from the traditional to the digital.

The corner zone has a pocket park. The area has a wooden walkway and seats, providing the readers with a corner to read and relax.
